A recent survey revealed that nearly one-third of South Africans have heard of the drug Prilosec, which is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux.
Dr G. D. Nierenberg, the chief executive officer of the leading Prilosec (esomeprazole), said that the drug’s popularity has been growing steadily since its release in 2010. Prilosec, which treats common heartburn problems, is often prescribed to people in South Africa for the long term.
Nierenberg said the survey of 2,000 South Africans showed that the availability of Prilosec increased by an average of 5.2 percent over the next three months. In comparison, the availability of Prilosec in the general population had remained the same.
“The price of Prilosec is not an issue for most people,” Nierenberg said. “We see that Prilosec can be a lifesaver for a lot of people. But it doesn’t have the same appeal for everyone.”
Nierenberg further explained that people in the South African capital and the West African nation have been turning to Prilosec for long-term management of their heartburn. “It’s been available in the form of Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and Prilobacter for years. It has the same active ingredient as Prilosec, which works well to treat the symptoms of heartburn,” he said.
Nierenberg added that Prilosec can be taken with or without food, though the drug is usually taken daily. He said that most people who use Prilosec do not need a prescription, and that Prilosec can be bought over the counter, such as Omelet or Zylomil. However, the Prilosec price is not a guarantee and may fluctuate based on the pharmacy.
Prilosec, which is manufactured by the company Nesus (manufactured by Pfizer), has been available in South Africa for over a decade. The drug has become a household name among South Africans, leading to a large number of patients turning to the drug for long-term management.
According to Nierenberg, Prilosec is used in about 80 percent of cases. In about 30 percent of cases, the use of Prilosec leads to heartburn symptoms. According to Nierenberg, the drug’s side effects include stomach pain, indigestion and acid reflux.
“We use it as an aid to patients with a history of heartburn. We’ve seen that people who are on Prilosec can get back to normal and get relief from the pain and discomfort of heartburn,” he said.
Prilosec is available in different formulations and strengths. The most commonly prescribed brand name Prilosec is Nexium. It is also available in various forms, such as tablets and capsules. According to Nierenberg, Prilosec’s price has been significantly cheaper than other brands, and its prices are not as high as those of some other drugs.
Nierenberg also pointed out that the price of Prilosec is not guaranteed, and that Prilosec may fluctuate based on the pharmacy. Nierenberg said that Prilosec has a long shelf life, which makes it suitable for people who are not able to afford the drug.
“Prilosec is a very effective medication for the treatment of heartburn. The main side effects of Prilosec are stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. But the main drug-drug interactions between Prilosec and other drugs are gastrointestinal and cardiovascular,” Nierenberg said.
Prilosec has a short half-life of about 17 hours, and the drug is not known to affect the liver. According to Nierenberg, Prilosec is a safe and effective drug for people who are suffering from heartburn.
Nierenberg added that the popularity of Prilosec in South Africa has been growing. “It has become popular because it’s easily available and it’s easy to buy,” he said.
However, he did not believe that there was a shortage of Prilosec among people who use it. “There is a wide variety of Prilosec available. It is not a drug for everyone, and the price is not an issue for many people.
