The company has already said it will sell Prilosec in a second-party generic version, which is sold by AstraZeneca, to be sold by AstraZeneca.
SARANO is one of the world’s largest drugmakers, with an estimated $20.1 billion in annual sales. But AstraZeneca has said it expects Nexium to be worth $2.6 billion in the United States and $4.3 billion in the rest of Europe. It has also said that it would sell the drug for a much lower price than Prilosec, and will buy the generic for $2.5 billion to $2.8 billion.
SARANO said it had no plans to sell the generic Prilosec after it was approved in Europe for the first time in 2023. Like Prilosec, Nexium, the branded drug was approved in May 2001 for the treatment of acid reflux, a chronic condition in which acid reflux damages the stomach lining and increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems.
